Workshops
Have you ever wanted to build your own home? Interested in eco building but don't know much about it? Fancy a holiday with a difference, getting your hands and feet dirty building with muddy earth? Come and join our workshop in beautiful northern Thailand. Using rice husks (hulls) and sand, lime and mud, bamboo and local materials combined together, we will build a Roundhouse with thick walls to keep cool in summer and warm in winter.
Maggi will be facilitating workshops, after building and perfecting this method for the past 8 years at Chiang Dao Roundhouses (see Maggi's Blog for information on this building technique and about previous workshops).
If you are interested, let Maggi know and you will be informed when there is information on new workshops.
If you are in northern Thailand, you are welcome to visit Chiang Dao Roundhouses and have a look at the kind of building that you will be learning how to make on the workshop. Please let Maggi know in advance if you would like to visit.
Our workshop will take place in beautiful Chiang Dao
We will be building at Chiang Dao Roundhouses. We will be constructing a similar roundhouse to those already on the property..
There are 3 Roundhouses for workshopers to stay in with double beds - first come first served! Other accommodation with a range of prices can be arranged. (Prices from 1000 Baht to 200 Baht per night)
Vegetarian food will be available, 3 meals a day, plus tea, coffee and water
We will build a roundhouse - starting with the frame
We will build a roundhouse, starting with a frame of bamboo and some steel. You will learn how to cut and split bamboo to make the trellis frame.
Doors and windows are set into the frame before we start to fill in the walls with our bags of rice husks.
Walls made of bags of rice husks
We then build the walls with bags of rice husks. This task goes very quickly as the bags are light weight and easilly attached to our frame.
We will also learn how to make a bench of earthbags, and shelves of bamboo, all covered with earth plasters. And we will learn how to make wall decorations with bottles.
Covering the bags with mud plaster
Now is our chance to get muddy! Using our mix of earth, sand, lime and rice husks we will cover the walls with muddy plaster.
The cost for the 10 day workshop will be 12,500 Baht including all meals. Accommodation is not included - a variety is available at different prices.
